Michigan Tinnitus Device
A tinnitus device developed at the University of Michigan offers promising results in reducing or eliminating tinnitus symptoms for some patients.
A University of Michigan team led by Susan Shore, Ph.D., has developed the Michigan Tinnitus Device, a novel technology that alleviates tinnitus through a sequence of auditory and somatosensory stimuli to the face or neck. The treatment utilizes a stimulus protocol consisting of precisely timed sounds alternated with weak electrical pulses that activate touch-sensitive nerves, aimed at steering damaged nerve cells back to normal activity.
Self Massage Techniques for Tinnitus
Self-massage techniques such as massaging around the mastoid process, smoothing the gallbladder meridian, scissor massage, rubbing the ears, eardrum stimulation, beating the heavenly drums, and massaging the neck muscles can help relieve tinnitus. These techniques should be used in conjunction with other treatments, such as diet, exercise, mental health, and environmental control.
For each self-massage technique, you should do 36 repetitions. You can do these self-massage techniques as often as you feel comfortable. Take breaks in between to allow the muscles to relax.
Massage around the Mastoid: Use your thumb to massage slowly up, around, and in front of the mastoid process, which is a bone behind your ears. Take your time and do it gently.
Smoothing the Gall Bladder Meridian: Find points along the side of the head, and if any are tender or painful, pluck in a guitar string at that point.
Scissor Massage: Put your middle finger in front of your ears and your index finger behind them. Press and rub for 36 times.
Rubbing the Ears: Use your thumb and index finger to rub the ear from the top to the bottom, 36 times.
Eardrum Stimulation: Put your palms on your ears and release and hold, 36 times.
Beating the Heavenly Drums: Put your index finger on top of your middle finger and flick it down. Put your palms on your ears and your other fingers on the back of your skull and do the flicking motion for 36 times.
Massage the Neck Muscles: Put three fingers on the back of the neck and slowly pluck out, or massage any points
