Happiness

Who is happy? This is a person, who has a healthy body, is dowered with peace of mind and cultivates his talents.

Happiness

When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us. Helen Keller

Marcus Aurelius

Ambition means tying your well-being to what other people say or do…Sanity means tying it to your own actions.

The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts

The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature.

Ignoring what goes on in other people’s souls—no one ever came to grief that way

Ignoring what goes on in other people’s souls—no one ever came to grief that way. But if you won’t keep track of what your own soul’s doing, how can you not be unhappy?

Keep hold of this alone and remember it: each of us lives only now, this brief instant

Forget everything else. Keep hold of this alone and remember it: Each of us lives only now, this brief instant. The rest has been lived already, or is impossible to see. The span we live is small—small as the corner of the earth in which we live it. Small as even the greatest renown, passed from mouth to mouth by short-lived stick figures, ignorant alike of themselves and those long dead.

Not to display anger or other emotions. To be free of passion and yet full of love. Marcus Aurelius

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

It is by being fully involved with every detail of our lives, whether good or bad, that we find happiness, not by trying to look for it directly.

Develop the habit of doing whatever needs to be done with concentrated attention

The first step is to develop the habit of doing whatever needs to be done with concentrated attention, with skill rather than inertia. Even the most routine tasks, like washing dishes, dressing, or mowing the lawn become more rewarding if we approach them with the care it would take to make a work of art.

The next step is to transfer some psychic energy each day from tasks that we don’t like doing, or from passive leisure, into something we never did before, or something we enjoy doing but don’t do often enough because it seems too much trouble. There are literally millions of potentially interesting things in the world to see, to do, to learn about. But they don’t become actually interesting until we devote attention to them.

A person can make himself happy, or miserable

A person can make himself happy, or miserable, regardless of what is actually happening “outside,” just by changing the contents of consciousness. We all know individuals who can transform hopeless situations into challenges to be overcome, just through the force of their personalities. This ability to persevere despite obstacles and setbacks is the quality people most admire in others, and justly so; it is probably the most important trait not only for succeeding in life, but for enjoying it as well.

The task is to learn how to enjoy everyday life without diminishing other people's chances to enjoy theirs. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

Epictetus

He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.

There is only one way to happiness

There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power or our will.

A wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not

He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.

Seek to have events happen as they do happen

Don't seek to have events happen as you wish, but wish them to happen as they do happen, and all will be well with you.

True happiness ongoing dynamic performance of worthy deeds

Happiness is commonly mistaken for passively experienced pleasure or leisure… True happiness is a verb. It’s the ongoing dynamic performance of worthy deeds.

Man is worried by his imagined anxieties about real problems

Man is not worried by real problems so much as by his imagined anxieties about real problems.

Do not seek for things to happen the way you want them to

Do not seek for things to happen the way you want them to; rather, wish that what happens happen the way it happens: then you will be happy.

There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will. Epictetus

Werner Erhard

Happiness is a function
of accepting what is.

Following the rainbow is happiness

Happiness isn't at the end of the rainbow. Happiness is at the beginning of the rainbow. Following the rainbow is happiness, not getting to the end of it.

Choose what you already have

The quickest way to be happy is to choose what you already have.

Living is the process of experiencing right now

Living is not the story of your life. Living is the process of experiencing right now.

Live as if your life depends upon it. — Werner Erhard

Jiddu Krishnamurti

Happiness comes when you are doing something because you really love to do it, and not because it gives you riches or makes you a prominent person.

It is only when the mind is free from the old that it meets everything anew

When man is free, without any motive of fear, of envy or of sorrow, then only is the mind naturally peaceful and still. Then it can see not only the truth in daily life from moment to moment but also go beyond all perception; and therefore there is the ending of the observer and the observed, and duality ceases.

It is only when the mind is free from the old that it meets everything anew, and in that there is joy.

Doing something because you really love to do it

Happiness comes when you are doing something because you really love to do it, and not because it gives you riches or makes you a prominent person.

Always fresh, always young, innocent, full of vigour and passion

To be free of all authority, of your own and that of another, is to die to everything of yesterday, so that your mind is always fresh, always young, innocent, full of vigour and passion. It is only in that state that one learns and observes. And for this, a great deal of awareness is required, actual awareness of what is going on inside yourself, without correcting it or telling it what it should or should not be, because the moment you correct it you have established another authority, a censor.

Happiness is strange; it comes when you are not seeking it

Happiness is strange; it comes when you are not seeking it. When you are not making an effort to be happy, then unexpectedly, mysteriously, happiness is there, born of purity, of a loveliness of being.

When there is this silence of the mind action springs from it, and this action does not cause confusion or misery. Jiddu Krishnamurti

Anthony de Mello

Happiness is our natural state.

All you need to be really happy, my dear, is something to be enthusiastic about

To the woman who complained that riches hadn’t made her happy the Master said. “You speak as if luxury and comfort were ingredients of happiness: whereas all you need to be really happy, my dear, is something to be enthusiastic about.”

Happiness is our natural state

Happiness is our natural state. Happiness is the natural state of little children, to whom the kingdom belongs until they have been polluted and contaminated by the stupidity of society and culture.

Then why don't you experience it?

Then why don't you experience it? Because you've got to drop something. You've got to drop illusions. You don't have to add anything in order to be happy; you've got to drop something. Life is easy, life is delightful. It's only hard on your illusions, your ambitions, your greed, your cravings. Do you know where these things come from? From having identified with all kinds of labels!

The three big ones in life are wealth, health, and happiness. We pursue them in that order, but their importance is reverse.

I don’t think life is that hard. I think we make it hard.

I don’t think life is that hard. I think we make it hard. One of the things I’m trying to get rid of is the word “should.” Whenever the word “should” creeps up in your mind, it’s guilt or social programming. Doing something because you “should” basically means you don’t actually want to do it. It’s just making you miserable, so I’m trying to eliminate as many “shoulds” from my life as possible.

Unhappiness comes from comparing things from the past to the present

A lot of our unhappiness comes from comparing things from the past to the present.

The answer that works for me is going to be nonsense to you, and vice versa

The answer that works for me is going to be nonsense to you, and vice versa. Whatever happiness means to me, it means something different to you. I think it’s very important to explore what these definitions are.

For some people I know, it’s a flow state. For some people, it’s satisfaction. For some people, it’s a feeling of contentment. My definition keeps evolving. The answer I would have given you a year ago will be different than what I tell you now.

Today, I believe happiness is really a default state. Happiness is there when you remove the sense of something missing in your life.

Happiness is a choice you make and a skill you develop

True happiness comes out of peace

I think true happiness comes out of peace. Peace comes out of many things, but it comes from fundamentally understanding yourself.

It comes from looking inside yourself and how much what you’re reacting to are emotional reactions or attachment. Self-inflicted suffering. It’s desire that you have for things that you probably shouldn’t care that much about.

When I say you want to be happy, what I’m actually saying is you want to find peace. We say peace of mind, but what we really want is peace from mind.

The most important trick to be happy is to realize that happiness is a skill that you develop

The most important trick to be happy is to realize that happiness is a skill that you develop and a choice that you make. You choose to be happy, and then you work at it. It’s just like building muscles. It’s just like losing weight. It’s just like succeeding at your job. It’s just like learning calculus. You decide it’s important to you. You prioritize it above everything else. You read everything on the topic

You can literally destroy your happiness if you spend all of your time living in delusions of the future

At any given time, when you’re walking down the streets, a very small percentage of your brain is focused on the present. The rest is planning the future or regretting the past. This keeps you from having an incredible experience. It’s keeping you from seeing the beauty in everything and for being grateful for where you are.

You can literally destroy your happiness if you spend all of your time living in delusions of the future. We crave experiences that will make us be present, but the cravings themselves take us from the present moment.

Peace is happiness at rest, and happiness is peace in motion

Peace is happiness at rest, and happiness is peace in motion. You can convert peace into happiness anytime you want. But peace is what you want most of the time. If you’re a peaceful person, anything you do will be a happy activity.

Today, the way we think you get peace is by resolving all your external problems. But there are unlimited external problems. The only way to actually get peace on the inside is by giving up this idea of problems.

There’s a line from Blaise Pascal I read. Basically, it says: “All of man’s troubles arise because he cannot sit in a room quietly by himself.” If you could just sit for thirty minutes and be happy, you are successful. That is a very powerful place to be, but very few of us get there.

The most important trick to being happy is to realize happiness is a skill you develop and a choice you make. Naval

Derek Sivers

Make sure you know what makes you
happy, and don’t forget it.

Never forget why you’re really doing what you’re doing. Are you helping people? Are they happy? Are you happy? Are you profitable? Isn’t that enough?

Most people don’t know why they’re doing what they’re doing. They imitate others, go with the flow, and follow paths without making their own. They spend decades in pursuit of something that someone convinced them they should want, without realizing that it won’t make them happy.

The purpose of money is to trade for things that make you happy

So if you can bypass money and get directly to the happy, you've saved a lot of trouble. And it makes others happier, too, when you organize your business around non-monetary things.

If I’m not saying ‘Hell Yeah!’ to something, then I say no.

Don't be on your deathbed someday, having squandered your one chance at life, full of regret because you pursued little distractions instead of big dreams.

Just pay close attention to what excites you and what drains you

Just pay close attention to what excites you and what drains you. Pay close attention to when you're being the real you and when you're trying to impress an invisible jury.

If you think your life’s purpose needs to hit you like a lightning bolt, you’ll overlook the little day-to-day things that fascinate you. If you think revolution needs to feel like war, you’ll overlook the importance of simply serving people better. Derek Sivers

Leo Tolstoy

The purpose of life is to express
love in all its manifestations.

The purpose of your life

Just imagine that the purpose of your life is your happiness only—then life becomes a cruel and senseless thing.

You have to embrace what the wisdom of humanity

You have to embrace what the wisdom of humanity, your intellect, and your heart tell you: that the meaning of life is to serve the force that sent you into the world. Then life becomes a constant joy.

An enlightened person understands the meaning and purpose of his life

A scholar knows many books; a well-educated person has knowledge and skills; an enlightened person understands the meaning and purpose of his life.

Be satisfied with the small things in life

We should be satisfied with the small things in life. The less we need, the less trouble we can have.

Live for your soul, and without trying or even understanding that you're doing it, you will contribute to the improvement of society. Leo Tolstoy

Alan Watts

The meaning of happiness consists in three elements — freedom, gratitude, and the sense of wonder

All men suffer, but not all are unhappy

All men suffer, but not all are unhappy, for unhappiness is a reaction to suffering, not suffering itself.

Unless one is able to live fully in the present, the future is a hoax

Unless one is able to live fully in the present, the future is a hoax. There is no point whatever in making plans for a future which you will never be able to enjoy. When your plans mature, you will still be living for some other future beyond. You will never, never be able to sit back with full contentment and say, 'Now, I’ve arrived!'

When we engage deeply in our work, it is no longer work

When we engage deeply in our work, it is no longer work. When we have a singular focus on the present – everything is alive, everything is fun.

This is the real secret of life — to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play. Alan Watts
